This piece explores our forum’s journey from modest beginnings to Chicago’s largest tech community and reveals why both seasoned professionals and newcomers continue to join our ranks.
Tech Geeks Forum Illinois: The Early Days of Illinois Tech Geeks

The story of our tech community begins at the 133-year old Illinois Institute of Technology, which came to life through a remarkable “Million Dollar Sermon” by Chicago minister Frank Wakeley Gunsaulus in 1890. The original institution, named Armor Institute, offered innovative courses in engineering, chemistry, architecture, and library science.
A transformative change happened in 1940. Armor Institute merged with Lewis Institute to create what we know today as Illinois Institute of Technology.
The Institute of Design, founded by László Moholy-Nagy, became part of the institution in 1949. This addition brought a creative element to complement the technical foundation.
The “learn by doing” philosophy made our community stand out and appealed to both students and professionals. This hands-on approach drew a rich mix of minds from engineering enthusiasts to creative designers.
The campus layout helped build strong connections. Two elevated train lines on campus let tech enthusiasts connect with Chicago’s broader tech ecosystem. Student life thrived through the university’s support of over 150 different groups, which included professional chapters and student-run initiatives.
Small, focused groups became the backbone of our early community. The computer science department turned into a meeting point where students built lasting friendships.
These tight-knit groups helped members solve daily challenges and share solutions, according to a former student.
Chicago’s South Side location created perfect conditions for tech partnerships. The University Technology Park in 2006 was a game-changer. It provided space for life sciences and tech startups to grow. Students and professionals flocked to this hub, which enriched our expanding tech community.
Our early members brought global viewpoints to the table. While undergraduate programs stayed mostly domestic, graduate programs drew tech enthusiasts from across the world.
This blend of local and international talent sparked a dynamic exchange of ideas and innovative problem-solving approaches.
Building a Unique Tech Community
Our growing community thrives on a special mix of academic excellence and ground innovation.
The Ed Kaplan Family Institute for Innovation and Tech Entrepreneurship stands as our hub with innovative technology media labs, collaboration spaces, and maker facilities.
This center helps students develop an entrepreneurial mindset through programs focused on startups and venture capital.
Students make our community strong. They can join over 150 organizations that include professional chapters and student-run initiatives. The Student Government Association connects the administration with students and makes sure everyone’s voice matters.
Runway 606 in March 2024 changed everything. This revolutionary program created with Chicago Public Schools and City Colleges of Chicago opened new paths into tech fields. Students can now use their associate degrees earned in high school toward specific university programs.
The Interprofessional Projects (IPRO) Program sets our community apart. Since 1995, this key program has brought students from different majors together to solve ground challenges with design-centered methods. The Elevate program gives students hands-on experience through internships, research, and competitions.
Digital presence of our community has grown a lot. Each of the seven colleges now has its own verified space where members share updates and resources with their chapters.
A new directory system helps members find and connect with peers based on their location, industry, or graduation major.
Data drives our improvements. The university tracks directory views and member interactions in digital campaigns. This active approach helps us meet our community’s changing needs.
Our tech community’s impact reaches beyond campus. Strong industry connections help many members land internships and jobs through the school’s network. Chicago’s vibrant urban setting creates great chances to network and experience culture.
